Explore, the October edition. Get out and see where you live.

Hey guys!

Our last issue was all about what's happening right here at home. This one is for when you're ready to load up the car and go a little further. Apple picking up in the foothills, a date night in Napa, a coastal hike, and a heads up on Disney on Ice before the good seats are gone.

Pick one and make a day of it!

Find Your Hero, four days only

Real talk, I am the worst about hearing the fun stuff is coming to town, always a day late and a ticket short. So here is your heads-up with time to spare! Disney on Ice, Find Your Hero, is at Golden 1 Center October 29 to November 1. Hopefully this reaches you in time to grab the good seats, because these go fast.

A Fall Must-Do

Apple Hill

Camino · About 1.5 hours

Fifty orchards, one gold-and-crisp fall day

Up in the El Dorado foothills, more than fifty ranches throw open their gates every fall. Apple picking, hot cider and warm donuts, pumpkin patches, u-pick pie, Christmas-tree farms, and a few wineries and a hard-cider stop for the grownups.

Weekends are the move, but they get busy, so go early. Pack layers and an empty trunk, you will not be leaving empty-handed. Plan your route at applehill.com.

Old Sac · About 40 minutes

Wooden sidewalks, riverboats, and a candy overload

An easy, close win the kids will remember. Cobblestone streets and wooden boardwalks along the river, an old-school candy shop on every corner, riverboat cruises, and the excellent California State Railroad Museum. Great on a crisp fall afternoon.

The new table everyone in wine country is talking about. Chef Jade Cunningham, a French Laundry alum, is doing Filipino cuisine with full fine-dining polish. Book ahead, dress up, and make a whole night of it.

Want the Michelin version instead? Auro at the Four Seasons in Calistoga has held a star three years running, with vineyard views and a 750-label wine list.

The Palace of Fine Arts

San Francisco · About 1 hour

A Roman ruin, built for a world's fair, still standing

Near the Marina stands a soaring domed rotunda and colonnade that looks like it was airlifted from ancient Rome. It was built for the 1915 world's fair and never torn down. Swans on the lagoon, gorgeous at golden hour, and completely free to wander.

The Wild One

Sunrise Over the Vines

Napa · Bucket list

Book a hot-air balloon ride

Here is your out-of-the-box one. Lift off at dawn and float over the Napa vineyards while the fog burns off and the whole valley turns gold. Most flights end with a champagne breakfast. Splurgy, unforgettable, and closer than you think.

The Signature

Hidden Gem

Pacifica · About 1.5 hours

Mori Point

A cliff-top coastal hike most people drive right past on the way to somewhere else. The Lishumsha Coastal Trail runs 1.8 miles out and back, or take the 2.5-mile loop to the top for the big panoramic payoff. Ocean on one side, rolling green hills on the other.

Park on Beach Boulevard by the Pacifica pier, or Clarendon Road for the direct trailhead. Stay on the trail, the landscape is worth protecting.
